About David Corbett

After graduating from Wimbledon School of Art with a first class degree, David Corbett began a career as an independent sculptor. David is an international seller, creating unique and inventive sculpture for the home and garden. David’s work begins as a clay sculpture observed from life and through a moulding process he creates casts using unusual materials. Bent Copper was created this way – a life size male torso, sculpted from a life model and cast using 1p and 2p coins.
David has exhibited his work in UK wide galleries and garden art shows. His unusual use of materials in figurative sculpture, such as his lifesize coin torso, has drawn the attention of the corporate art industry and private collectors.

Biography / CV of David Corbett

After completing a Foundation course in Art and Design David Corbett was accepted into Wimbledon School of Art where he studied Technical Arts Interpretation for 3 years under the tutoring of Alan Sly. Here he focused on figurative sculpting in clay and gained experience in a variety of moulding and casting techniques. David achieved a first class BA (Hons) degree.

During his final year David created an installation consisting of 2 full size resin figures. To gain the knowledge needed to mould the figure and produce multiples David worked with an experienced sculptor and moulder. Here he learnt the techniques needed to make a polyurethane mould with a fiberglass jacket. He also gained experience in a variety of casting techniques.

After his 3 years at Wimbledon, in 2002 David went on to work at Ridgeway Sculpture Design for another year. He continued to gain experience and knowledge in moulding and casting.

In the summer of 2003 David was invited to exhibit his degree show piece in an exhibition called `Emerging Young Artists 2003` in Birmingham. Here his work was photographed and shown in 2 newspapers; The Birmingham Post and The Birmingham evening Mail.

David continued to work in his studio in London for the next 2 years where he created `The Lilly Fountain` which was exhibited at the Sir Harold Hillier Gardens in 2004.

In 2007 David re-located to join a community of artists at `The Arches` in Southampton. Here various opportunities arose including the exhibition of work in the 2008 Southampton Boat Show. During his time in Hampshire his work was exhibited in a number of galleries.

The first edition of `Bent Copper` was sold to BDO Stoy Hayward in early 2009 where it attracted the attention of the `Hampshire Chronicle Business Monthly` Magazine, featuring on the front page.

Artist Statement of David Corbett

During my degree course I was given the opportunity to focus on figurative sculpture and the vital processes involved in producing a final work of art. I developed a thorough understanding of moulding and casting techniques and the materials and finishes that can be achieved. Today, I still use this knowledge and enjoy experimenting with materials, colour and finishes. I am particularly interested in the qualities of concrete and the way, through the right process, it can be polished to imitate metal or stone.

"It is not hard to understand modern art. If it hangs on a wall it's a painting, and if you can walk around it it's a sculpture."
Tom Stoppard
